Rip Justin Green (July 25, 1945-April 23, 2022)

Back in the olden days of the Underground, Justin Green was on my short list for 'most under acknowledged underground cartoonist'. I think over the years that changed quite a bit. 

But it needs to continue to be said that he was essentially the father of both the autobiographical comic book ...

and the Mini-Comic...

And of course he was a masterful sign painter...

I’ve always admired his stuff a lot. 

Much of the content of underground comix scene has not aged well but Justin Green's work still seems alive to me.

By way of tribute, here's some random items from my archives:

         Linoleum block print he did for a print show I put together back in the early 1980s

A small wash drawing given to me by Justin. He claimed it was an “unintended portrait” me.

(This was many decades ago before my beard turned gray).
