11th Annual Roadworks

Yesterday, Molly and I  attended the 11th annual Roadworks. It's a fundrasier for the San Francisco Center for the Book.  SFCB promotes and supports book arts--letterpress printing, book binding and the creation of artists' books.

The Roadworks event is always interesting. Aside from the opportunity to watch a huge and classic Buffalo Springfield steamroller 'press' a 3 foot square blockprint onto paper right in the middle of Rhode Island Street, the event offers a chance to meet printmakers and purchase prints.

After the print was made, printing assistants hung the prints on nearby fencing. Here is a great Godzilla-destroys-San Francisco print by Eric Rewitzer.

Inside the Center for the Book you can check out the fine collection of operational presses.

This one, a Reliance Midget, used to belong to printer Arlin Philpott, our Fairfaxian neighbor.

There were few more large prints from past events on display inside.

10th Annual Roadworks Printing Festival

This last weekend we attended the 10th Annual Roadworks--a steamroller printing festival.

The event is a fundraiser for the San Francisco Center for the Book.

This year's steamroller was a classic.

Printmakers carve gigantoid block prints which are inked and then "pressed" with the steamroller right on the street.


Here are a few of the prints:

There are printmakers selling their works at booths on the street. 

You can also tour the Center and even play around with some of the presses.

Roadworks at the Center for the Book

We attended the 9th Annual Roadworks: A Steamroller Printing Festival in San Francisco this last weekend.

Printmakers cut large -3 foot square- block prints which are pressed by a three ton steamroller. It's a fundraiser for the Center for the Book and takes place on the street just outside the Center.

Featured printmakers this year included Rik Olsen, Favianna Rodriguez, Mike Kimball, Caitlin Mattisson, and Anna Branning.

In addition there was an exhibit of Rik Olsen's work at the Center for the Book.

On Saturday I attended the 8^th annual Roadworks Steamroller Printing Festival in San Francisco.A truly festive, public approach to printmaking.  A three ton steamroller is driven over large three foot square carved and inked linoleum blocks.  The prints are a knockout.

Some very fine printmakers participated including Rik Olsen, Rigel Stuhmiller and Nora Aoyagi.

Other events at Roadworks included letterpress and bookmaking demonstrations, live music and vendors.

I purchased this print by a talented artist, Daniel Gonzalez.
